    • Rolls Royce Nuclear

      Feb 1974 - Feb 1977
      Electronics Engineer

As an electronics maintenance engineer, the role covered many aspects of electronics and computer-specific areas. Computer technology was fairly young, you still had to paper-tape the bootstrap for instance. Analogue computing was used for reactor simulations and valves were still in vogue. Several digital computers were introduced and my involvement was, for instance, ensuring that the interfaces for the various sensors were consistent plus making sure that the more complex device interfaces were 100%. • Office International

      Feb 1977 - Feb 1984
      Systems Analyst/Programmer

Having spent some time with the computer hardware supplier which was part of Office International I became interested in Software. The director asked me if I could "computerize" (remember computers were effectively a completely new ball game) the several branches of Office International. Having seen the mess other companies had made, I gambled that I could and said yes. I had contacted on several occasions the company Digital Equipment and had by now an in-depth knowledge of the hardware (PDP11 etc.) which I had also used at Rolls Royce. In 5 years there was a complete suite of programs ie. Sales, Purchase, Nominal, Management Reporting, Rentals, Stock etc. and in the process I had cracked real-time and what was later to be called transaction rollback. Show less

      Bus Driver

A bus driver does what a bus driver does. It is not the perfect occupation but it keeps the wolf from the door, so to speak(type)...a little explanation...First, Am I too old to be considered for a technical job I could be good at ?, The problem is I've been out of the business for a while. More grey hair..up to the age of 49 I worked both in the UK and in Europe as an IT contractor. I earned the right to be called a professional (analysis, tech. consultancy), in that I worked for what I received. Having based my major technical base on a company in the US by the name of Digital Equipment I was disappointed that it was disposed of and cherry picked by HP. My CV was effectively blown to bits.9/11 also played a part. At the time I was working in Germany at the Bourse. Contracts were severed with the Chicago Board of Exchange. I came back to the UK and “other” people had filled the “slots” (love Blair and Brown, remember fast track visas?). But I still have a fully functional brain, and believe me it can be very frustrating knowing what could be possible...So I had to go into survival mode. I started as a bus driver, tried driving instructing (I was actually very good until it came to acting for the examiner) and remained a bus driver, albeit given time out to concentrate on my project. What I have been able to do is to understand people for what they are. But I continued with analysis...If you are familiar with my tweeting (@withthechange), you will know that I've recently been able to get my project independently evaluated. I've renamed it to reflect exactly what it does. It is actually a torque magnifier. A single retrofit device has been seen to increase the output of a single phase of a car alternator by over 100% ; I'm now working on the other two phases. Show less
