Experience

Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc.
Jun 2001 - Jul 2003Principal InvestigatorAs a Principal Investigator in cultural resource management, I was responsible for all aspects of projects completed under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. In this capacity, I frequently worked with the Army Corps of Engineers, the State Transportation Cabinet, and Kentucky Heritage Council, among many other federal, state, and local agencies. I facilitated communication and interaction between those vested in a particular project, including our company, the client, field and laboratory technicians, historians, sound engineers, the media, and the general public, among others. I tracked all aspects of ongoing projects, including deadlines, time allocations, staff assignments, and project resources to assure quality products that were (ideally) on time and under budget. I was also responsible for complying with federal, state, and local regulations for conducting archaeology as well as execution of Memoranda of Understanding or Agreement. Completion of my duties required me to manage my time effectively, work on several different tasks concurrently, remain organized and detail-oriented, and communicate effectively both verbally and in written correspondence. Purdue University
Jul 2003 - Dec 2005Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and AnthropologyAs an active teacher-scholar in the joint Department of Sociology and Anthropology, I was responsible for the annual archaeological field school in addition to teaching a 2-2 load during the academic year. I facilitated student engagement with the local community, presented a variety of public education and outreach lectures/activities, and collaborated with the local historical society and local libraries on relevant programming. I contributed to intellectual life in the department by attending seminars, lectures, and other scholarly events as well as shared my own research in these venues. I developed strong relationships with other departments and units on campus, particularly history and forensic science. I disseminated my research results on cultural landscapes of the Midwest through conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications. I also mentored Master's level and Ph.D. students as both a primary faculty adviser and secondary committee member. Show less

University of Notre Dame
Jan 2006 - Jun 2020As Associate Professional Specialist, I was an active teacher-scholar in the Department of Anthropology. My historical and archaeological research focused on the ways in which nineteenth-century Irish immigrants in the US continued traditions from their homeland, incorporated new cultural norms and practices, and otherwise navigated their ever-changing social worlds. I involved students as active collaborators in the classroom, field, laboratory, and archives in both the United States and Ireland. Folklore, oral accounts, and community engagement were also central to this research endeavor. My extensive teaching experience includes: Archaeology & Culture; Introduction to Anthropology (four field; honors); Historical Archaeology (Grad/Undergrad); Fundamentals of Archaeology; Ancient Civilizations; Introduction to Human Evolution; Anthropology of Gender; Historical Archaeology of Irish America; Kinship and Comparative Social Organization ; Anthropology of Death (Grad/Undergrad); Lines of Difference: Cultural Constructions of Gender; Space, Place, and Landscape; The Irish Diaspora in America; The Global Irish; University Seminar (writing-intensive, freshmen); College Seminar (oral skills, sophomores); Local History (Co. Mayo, Ireland); and Genealogy (Research Methods in Heritage Studies). I have also taught many archaeological field schools that have included instruction in research design, archival research, field excavation, laboratory processing, ethical considerations, and technical reporting.I also mentored a number of students with their senior theses, facilitated their success in prestigious fellowships, and co-authored peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations with them.I was in this role as an Assistant Professional Specialist from January 2006 through June 2010 and as an Associate Professional Specialist from July 2010 through June 2020. Show less The Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement (CUSE) energizes intellectual life on campus; gets students involved in research, internships, and creative endeavors; and facilitates applications for prestigious national and international fellowships. As the Faculty Director of this University-wide initiative, I provided leadership within the Center, in collaboration with the Colleges, and across the University in support of Notre Dame's mission to provide an unsurpassed education, its commitment to scholarly excellence, and developing programs in internationalization. In addition to teaching and scholarship, I was responsible for (a) the appointment and management of all members of the team; (b) all processes associated with Human Resources, including professional development and mentoring of team members; (c) all strategic planning, resource allocation, budget development, and financial management, including oversight of the annual budget and fundraising for the Center; (d) critical assessment of procedures, protocols, and programming, including substantial revision of existing or development of new processes as required; (e) collaborative partnerships with key constituencies on and off campus; and (f) developing national and international relationships that raise the profile of the University and enhance Notre Dame's academic reputation, such as with the Council for Undergraduate Research (Washington, DC) and the Undergraduate Awards (Dublin). My valuable accomplishments in this role are:• Cultivated four Rhodes Scholars in three years (2015-2017) after more than a decade without success• Achieved a record number of Fulbright student winners, elevating the University of Notre Dame from 25th on the list of “Top Producing US Student Fulbright Institutions” (in 2011) to 2nd. Show less I provided administrative oversight to the undergraduate program in anthropology, including (a) tracking of student progress within the major/minor and assuring completion of requirements for 350-400 students; (b) development of the teaching schedule to meet departmental curricular needs as well as fulfill service obligations to the College of Arts and Letters and the University; (c) mentoring of students in their professional development as emerging scholars, including assisting students with finding research/internship placements, writing grants to support their activities, choosing study abroad locations, and discerning their future career goals; (d) collaboration with faculty in all aspects of teaching, research, and mentoring of undergraduates in the program; (e) development of programming for students about grant writing, applying to graduate schools, and conference presentations; and (f) providing venues for student presentation of research results, including the annual spring departmental research exposition and an annually-organized poster session featuring undergraduate research at the American Anthropological Association meetings. I also served as the liaison between Anthropology and many other units on campus including other departments, various Centers and Institutes, the Registrar, Office of International Studies, First Year Studies, and Academic Services for Student Athletes, among others. I also facilitated interaction between the Department and entities off campus, such as the scholars who oversee our internships at the Smithsonian Institute and Field Museum, prospective students and their parents, and faculty in study abroad programs around the globe. The cross-cultural literacy and global perspective that is the hallmark of anthropology greatly enhanced my capacity to interact with these diverse populations. I also taught a variety of courses and conducted research on the historical archaeology of Irish America. Show less

Fulbright Commission Ireland
Sept 2015 - Jun 2016Fulbright US ScholarI was hosted by the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Castlebar campus (now Atlantic Technological University) as a Fulbright U.S. Scholar during the 2015-2016 Academic Year. During the grant period, I developed the infrastructure for a multi-year, multi-institutional community archaeology project to examine landed estates in the Erris Barony of northwest County Mayo. Landed estates dominated 19th-century landscapes of western Ireland and daily life was shaped within this social, political, and economic system. Protestant landlords and Catholic tenants occupied the same geographical space, but inhabited very different worlds. Cottage clusters, known as clachans, were abundant on the Irish landscape, particularly in the west in the decades prior to the Great Famine. These tenant settlements were key loci of social reproduction and each household was embedded within the kin networks of the larger community. It was the clachan-dwelling population in the west of Ireland that was most affected by the Famine – the most traumatic event in modern Irish history and that which has most shaped the modern Irish landscape. Thus, this project illuminated both Ireland’s Famine-era past and contemporary history, historicity, and identity. Moreover, many of those who emigrated from Ireland to America in the mid-1800s came from clachans. Therefore, knowledge gained about these rural settlements is of significant importance to understanding domestic life not only in Ireland, but also the cultural traditions, beliefs, and practices that traversed the ocean along with peoples emigrating to the US.Taught Local History and Genealogy in the History and Geography Programme.
