The study combines the analysis of the edited medieval written sources, especially the contracts between landowners and farmers (8th-13th centuries), with the archaeobotanical results from the archaeological site of the castrum of Zagonara (11th-15th centuries) and from off-site material collected from cores in medieval marshland contexts (11th-13th centuries). The research aims to lay the foundations for a dialogue between the historical source ("perceived landscape") and the scientific-archaeological data (environment), with the aim of understanding all the different dimensions of the concept of landscape declined in a medieval lowland context.
