In collaboration with Christophe Servranckx, we selected an eclipsing binary star system and perform an astronomical observation of the variation of its brightness. We selected W UMa, a W Ursae Majoris type of binary system.Responsibilities:- Select a good candidate in the existing catalog- Perform the astronomical observation with the telescope T16 of Nerpio site in Spain- Do a data analysis of the results- Compare our results to the previous observation and communicate our conclusionTechnical environment:- IRIS- SAO image DS9- Excel Show less

I realized under the supervision of Pr.Vanlaer my master’s thesis having for subject the research of resonant production of dark matter with the experiment CMS. We studied the resonant production of dark matter via a pseudoscalar portal coupling to a 2 Higgs doublets model (2HDM) extension of the Standard Model at the CMS experiment. Our analysis focused on a final state including the production of dark matter and a Z boson decaying in a pair of electrons or muons. Our main goal was to define a frame at rest for the reconstructed Z boson and observe, in this frame, the angular distributions of the leptons for our signal and the main background. With the experience gained during my internship, I was able to continue to develop my knowledge of the tools used in particle physics, especially at the simulation level by using MadGraph5 to generate the signal samples that I used in my analysis. After verifying the parametrization of our simulations and the selection cut-offs, we showed the distribution of the transverse mass, an observable used in a previous analogous analysis, and our angular variables. The obtained distributions are different for the signal compared to the main background. Then, we observed the effect of the cut-offs and the kinematic on our angular distributions. Finally, we established four statistical tests in order to compare the discriminating power of the variables. We concluded that the transverse mass is more discriminating than the angular variables built in this analysis. However, the use of the three variables leads to the most discriminating test. So we have improved the power of the test for a fixed value of significance level ”α” compared to the test using the transverse mass only. Show less I realized a 6-month internship at ULB under the supervision of Pr. Pascal Vanlaer. The aim of my internship was to study the properties of the scalar boson in the decay channel into two Z bosons with the CMS experiment. During the latter, I learned formalism in the analysis of data and software used in this context. In addition to the theoretical and experimental elements that I developed during this internship and theoretical courses related to the subject, I learned from Professor Vanlaer notions of statistics and probability which allowed me to perform a statistical test on the data that I analyzed.Responsibilities:- Improve the precision of this physics research channel- Obtain a new physical variable allowing to differentiate the signal from the background- Perform data analysis to prove itTechnical environment :- C ++ / ROOT- Monte Carlo simulations- Statistics (Statistical test, Bayesian approach, data analysis, etc.)- Ubuntu Show less
