  The golden cyst nematode is a nematode that causes damage on oa. potato and tomato plants. Coming from South America, it causes damage to plants by reducing root systems, leading to water stress and nutrient deficiency. For my master thesis I have been searching for a potential anti-virulence gene present in this nematode. • Isolate and compare genetic sequences.• Conduct field trials to confirm findings.

  Koppert is the leading company in biological crop protection and natural pollination. Due to their intensive search for new organisms, and the best methods to breed them, they have managed to keep this position. During the many years that cacao is stored in depots, it is subject to attacks from moths and caterpillars. Koppert was looking for possibilities to combat these moths, and decided to look into the uses of the parasitic wasp Habrobracon hebetor.• Conduct research on the parasitic wasp, with the focus on:• Determine the optimal reproduction settings for the parasitic wasp.• Execute field trials to assess the effectivity of the parasitic wasp.   In December 2009 the Citrus Longhorn beetle was found in Boskoop. This beetle is a quarantine organism, and is subject to strict European regulations. To combat this situation, a crisis team was formed, which is responsible for controlling the situation at national and international scale. To guarantee the absence of this beetle, and secure trade relations, more than 80.000 trees and bushes were cut and analyzed, 8 million trees were visually inspected, and the trade regulations were updated. De uitdaging is om juist meer samen te werken met de natuur en zo ook de kosten te reduceren.
