      Trial and error

Activities and Societies: chorus and every time I could play baseball I had one bad mark keeping me from playing. In high school I took the business course probably because I just couldn't see myself going to college. The school of hard knocks is the way I was brought up learning by my mistakes and getting smarter with every mistake I made. The school of Jungle Warfare comes from me being sent to Vietnam less then 1 year after graduating high school. I guess I should have went to college but I preferred serving my country in the ultimate way IN THE ARMED FORCES. I started turning April of 2013 I started turning bowls but now I do a lot of wall hangings that are more pieces of art. My turning is a hobby and I turn a lot of unusual items. I make a lot of bowls, wine goblets and unique things like Christmas tree ornaments. It actually takes about 2 months to make 1 bowl. First step: Take a piece of green wood, cut it in half most of the time, and turn it into a shape that will be a rough cut shape and put aside for future turnings.Second Step: Dry the green cut piece in a heated box until it has a moisture content of about 10% or less.Third Step: Take the now dried piece and recut it to the shape that will be the finished item. This part could take one hour or several hours depending on the size, type of wood used, and pickiness of the turner. I AM VERY PICKY IF IT ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME IT ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR A CUSTOMER OF MINE. IF I DON'T WANT IT IN MY HOUSE I DON'T WANT IT IN YOUR HOUSE EITHER. Forth Step: Sand, Sand, Sand something that all wood turners hate to do but it has to be done. This time is determined by how good of an item the turner completes. In other words "How good was the second turning of the item and how many tool lines were left on the item before the turner decided to sand. The more tool lines the more sanding that is necessary. Either way you will take the time to turn the item as smooth as possible or you can sand, sand, sand.Fifth step: Chose a finish weather it is a Salad Bowl Finish, A lacquer finish, A poly finish, or a brushed finish. It all depends on the piece and how it will look best or what it will be used for. Sixth Step: Determine the price for the item depending on the last 5 steps. In all hour by hour it could take 2 hours to make an item or whatever time someone wants to put into an item some items take weeks to complete if they were worked on every day. Show less
