  Extracts prepared from 29 different medicinal plants have been screened for their cytotoxicity and anti-HIV activity used in vitro reporter-gene based cell assay systems. TZM-bl, CEM-GFP cell lines and PBLs (peripheral blood lymphocytes) have been used against HIV-1.Pure compounds have been isolated from two plants, characterized and identified by different chromatographic, MS and NMR techniques.The compounds isolated from plants inhibited HIV-1 infection by interfering at different stages of HIV-1 life cycle.Furthermore the active compounds were evaluated for the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines production, effect on integrity of epithelial cell layers by transepithelial resistance measurement and hemolytic effect on human red blood cells.
