  Intern

  I was an intern for the Urban Greening Programme (UGP). The UGP focuses on planting trees in the Under greened communities across the Western Cape and niche pockets of South Africa. With planting, comes monitoring of data and gathering input. Additionally, my personal project looked into the integration of the newly launched monitoring tree-App, MoniTree; which encourages the upkeep of the UGP and environmental stewardship at large.

  Specialisation Project: Resource Recovery

  For this project, my team and I worked together with the waterboard - Brabantse Delta, and Cargill, to produce bioplastic. The waterboard’s focus was to investigate whether Cargill’s residue streams are suitable for pre-acidification; subsequently making them suitable for Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) production. For this project, the production of Volatile Fatty Acids (VFAs) was first explored and later, the production of PHA from bacteria - using the produced VFAs as feed, was carried out. The project, for the first time at Avans University, contained the whole process chain and included all steps until the production of PHA. Show less

  Minor Project: Environmental Geography

  The current project aims to find the largest Nitrogen contributor on the Western section of the Loonse en Drunense Duinen (inland dunes), located in the Netherlands, in order to manage vegetation succession. This a 13-week project in collaboration with the North-Brabant province, RIVM (Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) and Natuurmonumenten.   APAC Youth Pre-Congress Committee

  As a pre-cursor to the main APAC congress, 65 young African conservationists designed and convened a three-day pre-congress workshop to discuss how Africa’s youth can position themselves more strategically. The goal was to elevate their voices and prove that they have the capacity and own the vision for Africa by contributing to the to Kigali Call to Action, a vital guiding document that will shape the continent’s priorities in upcoming BIODIVERSITY and CLIMATE CHANGE conventions.
