    Computational Neuroscientist

  • Education

    • University of Birmingham

      2008 - 2012
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Computational neuroscience

      • Lead investigator in four brain imaging projects using functional MRI to investigate the processing of 3D vision in the human brain. • My main responsibilities included: (i) the design and programming of computer-based visual stimuli, (ii) recruitment and testing of human participants, (iii) analysis of time series fMRI data or psychophysical data, (iv) extensive statistical analyses on the results, (v) visualization of results to team members and collaborators, and (vi) dissemination… Show more • Lead investigator in four brain imaging projects using functional MRI to investigate the processing of 3D vision in the human brain. • My main responsibilities included: (i) the design and programming of computer-based visual stimuli, (ii) recruitment and testing of human participants, (iii) analysis of time series fMRI data or psychophysical data, (iv) extensive statistical analyses on the results, (v) visualization of results to team members and collaborators, and (vi) dissemination of findings to the wider scientific community.• Measured eye-movements using a CRS eye-tracker and removed responses associated with blinks and saccades.• Performed visual function testing on healthy participants using a Wheatstone stereoscope. • Became operator of a 3T Philips MRI scanner. • Supported by the European Commission’s highly competitive Marie Curie Early Stage Research Fellow scholarship. • University of Sydney

      2004 - 2007
Bachelor of Science (Advanced) (B.Sc.) Advanced Mathematics; Psychology Honours I

      • I was awarded first class honours and a high distinction for my thesis where I devised, programmed and ran an empirical study into the illusion of "motion-induced blindness".• The mathematics major was at the advanced level and consisted of both applied and pure courses (e.g., linear algebra, partial differential equations, number theory and cryptography, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, biomathematics).

  • Experience

    • University of Birmingham

      Jan 2013 - Jul 2013
      Postdoctoral Research Associate

I ran an additional fMRI study into depth perception as an extension of my Ph.D., playing a larger role in its direction and completing tasks at a faster pace due to strict deadlines.

    • UNSW Australia

      Sept 2013 - Dec 2015
      Postdoctoral Research Associate

      • Brain imaging (fMRI) and behavioural (psychophysical) research on the topic of orientation processing in the human visual system. • I was responsible for entire projects throughout their life cycle. I programmed stimuli and experiments, recruited and tested participants, ran time series analysis on fMRI data, applied high-dimensional (n > 100) machine learning algorithms to patterns of brain activity and performed extensive statistical tests on the data.• Applied computational models using Bayesian statistics and maximum likelihood estimation to my results.• Configured and programmed numerous technical devices during set up of a new laboratory.• Co-wrote two grant applications to the National Health and Medical Research Council in order to obtain further funding. • Western Sydney University

      Dec 2021 - now
      Postdoctoral Research Associate

Technical lead for a project on neuro-aesthetics, examining the statistical properties of images to identify features that correlate with human preference using regression analysis.• Created and deployed a website to collect opinion on flower aesthetics from international respondents, rapidly developing skills in (Python-based) Django, Git, AWS, PostgreSQL, HTML, CSS and JavaScript and their functional interactions.• Developed an image analysis pipeline (MATLAB) to standardize the presentation of each flower image and subsequently conduct numerous algorithms (e.g., nonlinear optimization, K-means clustering, Fourier transforms) to parametrize specific flower features.• Co-supervised two honours students through all stages of an empirical project on genetic algorithms, from experiment design to statistical analysis to effective scientific writing.
