The PWO on watch is the officer incharge of the Operations room, to whom authority is delegated by the commanding Officer to “direct, co-ordinate and control ship operations.” PWOs also undertake designated departmental management roles. The PWO is intimately involved in controlling the ship’s activities aimed at accomplishing the assigned mission. To fight and win is a non-negotiable goal because failure to succeed will, in the worst case, involve loss of the ship. The PWO’s pivotal function in fighting the ship assigns great responsibility to the position. it therefore requires the highest standards of professional excellence, leadership and accountability. As a Warfare Officer I must be able to make safe decisions quickly and calmly, even under pressure. Often carrying out several tasks at the same time, and hence highly organised, flexible and adaptable. Relied upon to perform at the very best at any time of day or night. A proven leader, but also part of the team and a vital member in a ship’s peacetime, as well as operational, roles and tasks.
