  I won a bursary from Telkom and I worked in their IT department over holidays and during my practical year (1997), I worked on the helpdesk logging faults and requests, I worked in end user support doing basic software maintenance on the company PCs and I programmed (Visual basic) in their software department. I had to meet the end users to resolve issues and to interpret their requirements into specifications. I then had to use the specifications to design, code, test and debug the program. When I graduated I was instated in the network maintenance department where I was responsible for the monitoring of the network lines and equipment as well as basic maintenance on the network equipment. Due to internal restructuring I was transferred to the File server maintenance team, where I was responsible for setting up and installing new servers, maintenance of servers as well as administrative duties like creating mail boxes (GroupWise), changing passwords, resetting printer queues etc. I left because I wanted to program, as I believed this would allow me to be more creative.   Netsys specializes in weather programs. I wrote user interfaces that would be used by users at airports and weather service that would allow them to look up certain information from the databases of synop and meta weather messages. I received the specifications, which I then used to design, code, test and debug their programs. Since we worked with overseas clients, the first real interaction I had with them was when I demonstrated the programs to them. I also had to debug some of their existing software. Very little training was given and I had to train myself in the scripting languages. I left because of the better opportunities at Nanoteq, Netsys was not doing too well financialy.
