  Journalist and copywriter

  Open Radio was a charity-run radio station that helped find homes for North Korean refugees settling in Seoul. During my year there I worked as a food and drink writer, chronicling new and established restaurants in the foreigner-districts of the city and editing copy written by other broadcasters. I recorded sound bytes for broadcast, interviewed travelers and read the latest in food and drink news on the air. I also gave English speaking lessons to my coworkers.

  My duties involved training new staff in beer, fine wines and spirits, creating cocktail menus and perfect serve recipes, advising customers on wine pairings and running an extremely busy bar during service hours.

  Editorial assistant

  My position as an editorial assistant was a short-term internship involving reading unsolicited submissions, taking part in meetings to decide the merit of new projects and advising new authors on how to improve their submissions for future acceptances. While working at Canongate we received Gary Shteyngart's memoir, Little Failure, which I was tasked to read before it went to the board. Penguin eventually published this incredible piece of work but I was honoured to be one of the first people to open its pages. Show less

  While working at Drinkmonger I gained my WSET Level 2 in wines and spirits, received a fully rounded education on whisky, craft beers and gin and learned about the history, manufacturing and classifying of fine wine. I advised customers on their purchases, whether they be Belgian beers, a bottle of rare whisky or a two hundred pound bottle of wine. I was also tasked with window display designs to attract extra customers and properly showcase our products. While working for the company I attended three Whisky Fringe events where I talked attendees through a range of spirits, gave samples and sold bottles. Show less
