      Composite Manufacturing Engineer

12-month Industrial placement with GE Aviation and Hamble Aerostructures Ltd on their Hamble site in Southampton. I worked in the position of Composites Manufacturing Engineer reporting to the Lead Manufacturing Engineer. I mainly worked on the Airbus A350 XWB program, but I also completed work on the Eurofighter Typhoon, Airbus A400M, and Boeing 737 AEW&C military projects. My daily duties included overseeing the production of composite parts for the above mentioned programmes, by supporting the operators at various stages of production, mitigating deficiencies in serial production parts by inspecting them and issuing customised rework to be carried out where necessary, and enabling production by updating various governing documents such as manufacturing plans and production specifications. I also participated and managed a variety of continuous improvement projects on the Airbus A350 XWB program. I successfully completed two quality improvement project, one relating to reoccurring part-marking deficiencies which I resolved by creating and issuing a virtual tool to aid operators in part-marking, and a structural damage reoccurring deficiency which I resolved by issuing a part redesign to ensure structural stability of the part during the curing process. Other continuous improvement projects include the creation of a bespoke data analysis software in MATLAB to aid in understanding process capability in terms of part thickness, and the design of a bespoke gauge to aid in the accurate assembly of parts. Some additional skills gained through this experience that are worth mentioning, was my involvement in the New Product Introduction project for the Boeing 737 AEW&C where I aided the project manager in creating manufacturing procedures, and my experience and expertise in problem solving and operating Assembly Guidance Lasers in the clean room. Director Of Manufacturing

During my final year of undergraduate studies at Swansea University, I had the honour to be selected to serve as Director of Manufacturing for the university's Formula Student racing team. My existing two years experience working for the team, first as a Junior Structural Designer and then as Costing and Manufacturing Lead, coupled with my 12-month experience working as a Composite Manufacturing Engineer in my industrial placement, made me an optimal candidate for the Director of Manufacturing position. In my role, I worked in conjunction with the Technical Director and Area Leads to ensure all designed parts where designed for manufacturing, with the assets, budget, and capabilities of the team carefully considered when designing the manufacturing processes for each part. I also worked in conjunction with the Team Principal to create a manufacturing plan for the year to ensure our race car would be produced in time, and within budget. This detailed plan included lead times for the procurement of materials and parts, workshop and operator availability, and also included separate manufacturing plans for different assembly groups of the car, such as chassis, suspension, and aero, to ensure efficient time management following a lean production model. A worth mentioning highlight on my time spent in this role, was the creation of a bespoke composite manufacturing process, that included an adaptation of the Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion process, that enabled it to work with high porosity foam moulds to reduce manufacturing costs and better utilise the teams resources, Show less
