I had the pleasure of sitting on the Bench with HHJ Macmillan and gained a real insight into the inner workings of a range of criminal proceedings. As well as see many brilliant displays of advocacy, each notable in different ways. A key takeaway, amongst many, from this experience and one that I resonate with was whilst one of the aims of our CJS is to punish, this should also be balanced with the aim to rehabilitate. One does not supersede the other on the face of it, but consideration must be given to the circumstances and the specific needs of the offender. Show less
