  I worked on-board a commercial fishing vessel working predominantly with the gear construction, which also involved using metal burning, welding and grinding gear. I frequently worked on the engine hydraulics and Gilson winches and preparing the vessel for sea. In 2014 I completed my 3-week commercial fishing course, which enabled me to get my basic sea survival courses from February until now. Through undertaking various health and safety courses and my experience on vessels I have been aware of the importance of ensuring that safety is a main priority. This then gave me opportunities to work offshore where I undertook 5 to 7 day trips as a deck hand working out of Falmouth, Plymouth, Newlyn and the Irish Sea on a scallop dredger which involved taking care of the catch, shooting and hauling the gear, watch keeping, engine maintenance, gear construction, ropes and knots and various other activities. Being given the opportunity to take a watch on the vessel I was able to develop my managerial, teamwork and communication skills. I received acclaim for this role from the skipper. Show less
