      During this time I was responsible for the design and analysis of new microwave applicator structures and specifically the choking solutions. This project has been running as a research project for anumber of years, during which Stellenbosch University has been collaborating with Nottingham University (UK). The project sponsors include Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Outotec.Therefore, I had several opportunities to travel to the UK and Finland in order to carry out measurements and discuss future developments and goals.       I started off at Magus as the first user interaction engineer in a group of antenna engineers and developers working on a brand new software product.During my first year at Magus, I received extensive training and guidance regarding project management and usability design from our usability consultant - Phil Barrett. My position entailed: Managing the design effort of our software - from conceptualisation through to implementation, including translating user requirements into usable pieces of interaction in partnership with our UX design consultant, engineering, and product management.Designing wireframes, mock-ups, and prototypes to effectively communicate the user experience of features to internal stakeholders, our product manager and the development team.Conducting user research by usability testing of prototypes and the existing version of our software.Implementation on the design side. We work in WPF, and so I am responsible for our front end: graphic design of controls, styles and behaviour, which is done in XAML.Ensure a consistent look and feel, and experience across Antenna Magus.       I was privileged to work as an experience designer at Deloitte Consulting. I had the opportunity to work with some incredibly smart people and large corporate clients in South Africa in the financial services sector, including insurance providers, investment managers, institutional investment managers and retail banks. I learned how following a Design Thinking approach in these domains can be powerful and help businesses grow, and more importantly, I learned about some of the pitfalls that leave the approach ineffective: not realising any true change in those businesses. I have seen that businesses that adopt a customer-centric focus, and understand that this usually means a cultural shift over time, will be outperformers. Show less
