Qualifying Examination passed on 28 June, 2007Dissertation topic “Relation between Carbon Content, Exchangeable Cations and Shrink-Swell behavior of Selected Black Soils” I tested the hypothesis that drying (wet soils drying) and wetting (dry soils wetting) processes (i.e. hysteresis) of expansive soils are not similar. Soils are the three dimensional bodies. Hence, soils shrink and swell in three directions (length, breadth, and height). Thus, the vertic properties of soils should be expressed in terms of volume change rather than linear changes. We have developed new equations and predictor to measure shrink-swell behavior of black soils.       I worked in two projects at Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, MPKV, Rahuri; i) Quantification for threshold of safe utilization of distillery effluents as source of crop nutrient in agriculture-Funded CPCB, Govt of India,--Distillery effluents were used as source of nutrient in the scarcity and sub mountain zone of Maharashtra for soybean-wheat and Sugarcane crops, respectively. Spent wash used one time before sowing and with irrigation. Findings suggest that spent wash can be use once within three years for improvement of soil fertility and for agronomic yield.ii) GPS-GIS based model soil fertility map for precise fertilizers recommendation in selected districts to farmers of India- Funded by ICAR, New Delhi.--Geo reference soil samples were collected from 10 districts of western Maharashtra and analyzed for soil macro and micro nutrients. Extensively traveled/surveyed including remote areas, locate geo-reference points through GPS, interact with farmers thoroughly and discussed the benefits of soil fertility map. Show less
