    • Imperial London Hotels

      May 2001 - Sept 2007
      Fire Officer

I was responsible for undertaking fire risk assessments in a busy, privately owned hotel group based at Russell Square in London. The portfolio of risks was very broad, with up to 6,000 visitors per night in six hotels, large conferencing capacities, bars, restaurants, large commercial kitchens, underground car parking, retail outlets and a wide range of plant rooms and maintenance workshops. I was also responsible for fire safety at seven staff hostels (each the equivalent of a small hotel in size) and an industrial laundry complex. I was responsible for developing emergency plans and training / testing the incident response teams. I also developed a training programme for a large, ethnically diverse and highly transient workforce. This included the provision of training literature in ten languages and in some cases the addition of translators where literacy was a factor. Show less

    • Historic Royal Palaces

      Oct 2007 - now

Not a new job as such, but rather a rebranding after years of development in new areas. This job title better reflects the work I have been doing at the palaces the past few years and reinforces my interest in risk management in its broader sense. Fire risk management is my number one priority (a fire can take from us centuries of work and history in a single night), but my role now encompasses other risk management disciplines such as flood and other climate-related risks, pandemic response, incident management (including HRP's Major Incident Plan and supporting the palace's Salvage Teams), business continuity and the treatment of these risks by insurance. It is still all about protecting our magnificent palaces, the amazing collections within them, the environment in which these things exist, and of course, the people visiting, working and living in them. Show less As part of the Audit and Risk Team I am responsible for providing advice and assurance on fire risk at Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity which manages the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace, and Hillsborough Castle, the official royal residence in Northern Ireland.I take a lead role in emergency planning; developing first response procedures and HRP's Major Incident Plan. I assist with the development and testing of salvage procedures for historic collections and provide advice on business continuity matters. Show less HRP manages five historic palaces in the London area (HM Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House (Whitehall), Kensington Palace, and Kew Palace), and Hillsborough Castle, the official residence of the Queen in Northern Ireland. I am responsible for providing professional Fire, Health, Safety and Environment advice to HRP, and leading the Health and Safety Team through a period of restructuring. My principal areas of expertise are fire safety management, emergency planning, business continuity, salvage and damage control, policy and strategy. I also lead on accident investigation and corporate reporting. Show less Based at Hampton Court Palace I take the lead role in managing fire risk at some of Britain's best known historic palaces; undertaking fire risk assessments of historic buildings; developing fire strategies, determining policy and providing an advice service to project managers and designers to enable major exhibitions and public / corporate events to take place within the magnificent and unique settings offered by the palaces. I take a lead role in emergency planning within the organisation, developing contingency plans for a wide range of operational risks; identifying and building partnerships with key stakeholders and driving forward a culture of continual improvement.
