      May 2013 - now
      Co-Founder and Treasurer, ZACAH

In 2013, I co-founded ZACAH as a 501 c(3) non-profit to provide emergency financial assistance to prevent homelessness. ZACAH is a charitable organization operated by a group of dedicated Muslims in the Twin Cities, with broad, grass-roots support from the larger Twin Cities community. In 2017, recognizing the need to care for vulnerable women, we created the ZACAH Transitional Home to shelter women who were victims of domestic violence, refugees or evicted due to loss of income. This work is done in collaboration with many of our local partners including AWUM (Asian Women United Minnesota).During the pandemic as homelessness escalated exponentially, I was director of hotel-to-housing program. Our incredible team of deeply compassionate and committed young volunteers provided hotel housing for over 10,000 nights for over 1,500 unsheltered population in Minneapolis park encampments, and then found permanent housing for 143 families. Due to our work during the pandemic, the Minnesota Department of Human Services invited ZACAH to assist in resettlement of Afghan refugees. At present, I am directing the housing rental support services for Afghan refugees in Minnesota with grant support from DHS, and working in collaboration with several resettlement agencies and the Afghan Cultural Committee of Minnesota. We operate at an overhead of under 5%.My next goal at ZACAH is to create a larger pool of truly affordable housing for the homeless in an effort to rehabilitate their lives. Housing is health. Without housing and healthcare, social justice cannot be achieved. For more information, please visit www.zacah.org Show less

    • RAHMA HEART CARE

      Oct 2018 - now
Co-Founder and Director of Clinical Operations

Healthcare inequity remains a serious limitation in the United States with 20% of population uninsured, almost 40% underinsured and a very large number of undocumented immigrants who have no access to healthcare. In 2018, I co-founded Rahma Heart Care, a 501 c(3) non-profit clinic which provides cardiology consultative and diagnostic services to the uninsured, under-insured and undocumented population of Minnesota. All services are 100% free of cost, making Rahma Heart Care clinic the only clinic of its kind in the US. We collaborate with local FQHCs, community clinics and healthcare systems to care for their eligible patients who need cardiovascular care for prevention, primary or secondary care. Allina Health has been an invaluable partner in providing us space to provide these services in the Allina Clinic Bandana Square facility.Rahma Heart offers limited diagnostic services including ECG, echocardiogram, stress echocardiogram, vascular ultrasound, cardiac CT calcium score and limited rhythm monitoring tests, free of cost. In addition, we are working on expanding our services to include home sleep apnea testing as well. Consultations are available for general cardiology, electrophysiology, CHF and vascular diseases as well. The clinic has limited hours on Saturdays and is staffed by volunteer, practicing cardiologists, nurses, echosonographers, exercise physiologists and University of Minnesota students interested in various aspects of healthcare. We have a vision of expanding our services further for this deeply vulnerable population. For more information, please visit us at www.rahmaheartcare.org. Show less
