  Conceptualised a new framework and strategy to create a drone-based, very high-resolution label dataset. The preparation work included checking for geospatial data quality and integrity, developing processes, and conducting a relevant literature review.The thesis explored the capability of using deep learning to perform semantic segmentation on complex and heterogeneous buildings in various refugee camps in East Africa. A comparison between variations of U-Nets with different headers and initialised weights was explored. Additionally, the effects of input data with variable levels of drone motion artifacts were investigated.This study is connected to a wider pilot project on open-sourcing the assisted mapping platform for HOTOSM based on very high-resolution UAV data.
