    • PruProtect

      Dec 2007 - May 2013

I am an IT Development Manager at PruProtect, which is a joint venture between Discovery and Prudential in the UK. PruProtect sells insurance products to the UK market. Our operations are based in South Africa while the marketing and sales are run in the UK. I am the technical owner of the Finance and Commissions Systems at PruProtect. I build and manage relationships with the respective Business owners and support their areas to ensure their business objectives are met through the use of the Systems. My role entails the development of new System functionality and maintenance of existing systems. I oversee a team of technical specialists, developers, business analysts and test analysts who deliver projects by following the Agile development methodology of SCRUM. Agile development allows us to respond to business requirements faster and deliver on functionality in four-week cycles, thus enhancing the transparency of the development effort and minimizing the risk of project failures. My role primarily ensures that the applications we build remain both adaptive and innovative enough to cater for the needs of business so that PruProtect remains competitive. Some key outputs:~ Planning, organizing, leading and controlling activities~ Project management by prioritization, sizing, scheduling and reporting of work through the use of an Agile Project Management tool called Jira~ People management, both technical capacity and personal development; performance management; resource planning~ Client relationship management and networking~ Delivery of quality systems that are stable and reliable ~ Support production processes; communication & quick resolution of incidents~ Improve existing processes; seeking & introducing new technologies to enhance team effectiveness Show less I worked in the PruProtect Systems team and was involved in the development of systems which enable users to carry out their daily tasks. Our Systems are built on the Oracle and JAVA platforms and I specialized in Oracle. I worked in the development of our company’s website: www.pruprotect.co.uk. I was also responsible for the development of back-end processes.I used SQL, PL/SQL with the Oracle 11g database.Part of my responsibilities was also the maintenance of existing applications, with the exposure of working in a live environment. Below are some of the skills and lessons I learnt from this role:1. Ability to solve problems on the spot and thus deliver value which our internal clients could experience immediately.2. Managing client expectations and keeping within SLAs, and communicating when there were delays.3. Working on Production taught me the ability to work under pressure while ensuring that the system does not deteriorate. 4. Sharpening of technical skills on a regular basis - we constantly had to seek new ways of solving complex problems which current coding objects could not address5. Work with highly skilled team mates who challenged my thinking6. Leading a Systems Improvement Team to support maintenance of the systems. I was subsequently promoted to Development Manager in Sep 2011. Show less
