Elementary Classroom Teacher, Instructional Support Teacher, Academic Intervention Services Teacher

 In the position of Academic Intervention Services I was responsible for working collaboratively with third, fourth, and fifth grade classroom teachers to provide integrated interventions for students who had not met the NYS standards on the previous year’s English Language Arts (ELA) assessment in order to strengthen their skills and have them perform better the next year. In order to match the instructional needs of the students, I worked and planned closely with the classroom teachers to provide a combination of “push-in” and small group “pull-out” instruction. As a result of this collaboration 95% of the students I worked with received a passing score on the ELA Assessment and no longer required Academic Intervention Services support.  As Instructional Support Teacher my responsibilities included developing a district-wide systemic math problem-solving curriculum based on the work of Marilyn Burns, Marcy Cook, and Susan O’Connell. I also created and provided staff development to implement the math curriculum, mentored new staff and instructed district elementary staff in differentiated learning strategies. Additional responsibilities included creating and modeling “best math practices” in Early Kindergarten-5 classrooms, and working with remedial math students to strengthen their skills. Three other Instructional Support Teachers and I created an innovative method to deliver staff development that saved the District money on substitute teachers while still being able to provide effective training for all classroom teachers. The method called a “roll-through” became so well-known other area school districts started implementing it also.In the 35 years of my career as an elementary educator I have taught grades 2, 3, 4 and 5 as a classroom teacher. My goal was to provide a motivating, secure, fun, and challenging learning environment for my students. Show less

Using my Elementary Classroom experience, I am currently working part-time at the KOSC developing and teaching lessons in a variety of science content areas. I also present publicly to promote the many programs KOSC has to offer and encourage enrollment and participation.
