During my final year at ESMOD Berlin I focused on the rationality of sustainability in Fashion. I created a graduate collection with the aim of using no cotton to highlight the lack of affordable 'eco-certified' alternatives to organic cotton, and the irrationality that a certified organic cotton is considered more 'sustainable' than non-certified materials for which, as an example, resource consumption is naturally lower. My thesis compared the fashion industry with the rationality of democratic political systems, and put forward the case that unless there is a siginificant paradigm shift in consumer thought and behaviour, or large fashion organisations are disincentivised from continuing the focus on cheap, fast fashion; that sustainable fashion will remain a niche market in the same way that smaller political parties with outspoken views don't win elections on a national scale. Jan 2012 - Jun 2012
      Education intern

As an intern in Traid's education department, I went into schools as a part of a team that taught pupils about the crises affecting the fashion industry today. We also taught them basic sewing skills in a fun way, so that they might, in the future, be able to repair their clothes, rather than throw them away and create waste.

      Intern

During this five-week internship I was tasked with redesigning the e-commerce packaging, and designing a premium gift packaging for the company. I had to reach out to suppliers and work according to a set of strict criteria.

      Nov 2013 - Dec 2016

Working within the Front Row Society design and production teams, I designed and developed accessories with a focus on print and texture. I ensured both in-house concepts and artist collaborations were prepared for our producers, and refined during the sampling and development stages. I specialised in knitted and digitally printed products, and completed a solo supplier trip to China to expedite collection development. I worked at Front Row Society part-time alongside my studies. My responsibilities included such work as preparing design files for production, generating hang-tags and catalogues, and assisting with new product development. I was learning by doing, and this industry experience proved to supplement what I learnt at university very well.

As an intern at Christopher Raeburn I assisted with the day to day running of the studio, doing jobs such as quality control, packing orders and pattern tracing. I sewed some toiles, and a giant inflatable polar bear; and helped out during fashion week at the model casting, and by dressing at the show.

Asapreneur - sourcing, design and product development

I was responsible for the design development, pattern cutting, grading, and organising the sample production of the autumn/winter 2017 additions to their permanent collection. In order to train eleven of the brand’s seamstresses in the construction of the new garments I was based for two and a half months in Chittapur, in central India. I then spent two weeks in Londa, in western India to train the brand’s remaining four seamstresses in the construction of the new accessories. During this three-month placement in India I also oversaw quality control, the sourcing of fabrics for future collections, the building of better relationships with our suppliers throughout India, and the move into bigger and better equipped premises in Chittapur. There wasn’t anything about the placement that was easy but I relished the challenges I faced on a daily basis. Show less
