Electronic Imaging Center, Senior CAE Engineer, 1993-1995.• Technical leader for the redesign of an Environmental, Low Chem Film Processor (EPS) and the design of the engineering prototype. Generated design concepts for the fluid containment cell and reprogrammed the machine control of the EPS processor using Labview instead of dedicated software. • Designed an extremely high precision test fixture for use in a Laser Induced Thermal Imaging (LITI) scanner. Optimized the test fixture to achieve maximum stiffness for a specified weight. Utilized kinematic design techniques, piezo electric actuators, and vacuum for positioning glass substrates.• Responsible for the mechanical engineering development of the Radiographic Image Reader. Planned and coordinated the activities of the designers and engineers on the program. Developed a test system for evaluating the velocity uniformity of the linear position table used in the reader using a laser interferometer and appropriate data analysis. Designed the image translation system around a flat bed polygon scanning module. Investigated sources of image banding artifacts by correlating image, vibration, and interferometer data. Programmed the machine control of test fixtures using Labview. Show less 3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division, Advanced Process Engineer, 1989-1991.Transferred resinless molding technology to the manufacturing plant in Valley, NE. Process introduction, development of the resinless shell fiber compositions, and training plant personnel was achieved in record time. Scaled up production of the shell for the resinless 8710J Dust/Mist Respirator and developed a resinless outer shell for the 9920 Welding Respirator that resulted in a 15% reduction in raw material cost. Led the development efforts of the cold mold technology program by modeling the thermal characteristics and designing improvements for the molding press, by designing and analyzing experiments to determine the fiber composition and web handling procedures for shells used in the 8500 Nuisance Dust Mask and the 8710 Dust/Mist Respirator. Show less 3M Equipment Engineering and Fabrication Services, Adv. Design Engineer, 1985-1989.Provided machine design support that increased production and improved the reliability of Specialty Film Division's Simo-Biax Tenters in Decatur, AL and Chemolite. Developed finite element techniques to determine the deformation and its effect on optical path lengths for Diamond Grade optical sheeting and Total Internal Reflection film. Optimized the hub design of removable hard disk for Magnetic Media. Simulated the thermal conditions of the micro gravity experiments performed by the Space Research Lab for crystal growth research. Pioneered the use of ABAQUS - a general purpose finite element program for highly nonlinear analyses. Show less
