      Apart from my placement at HMS Host in Kuala Lumpur, I took Bahasa Melayu Level 1 language classes, 4 hours per week in the evenings, after work, for 8 weeks. Here, I gained more knowledge on Malaysian language and culture. Succesfully completed with certificate.

      Part of my International Facility Management education was to do a 6-month placement abroad. I did my placement at HMS Host in Kuala Lumpur where I was mainly responsible for the food cost calculations. I helped the company gain better insights into costing and how to control this. I worked alongside store managers and the purchasing department, creating an overall overview of all food costs by generating new templates in Excel.During my placement, I have experienced what it is like to work in an international company and how cultural differences play a role in way of working and communication. I was fortunate to gain more insight on different aspects of the company, in particular in the finance department. Show less

      As a student, I was an active volunteer at UNICEF Student Team Breda. UNICEF Student Team Breda is a group of students organizing events and activities in Breda to raise money and awareness for UNICEF. As of September 2018, I was assigned as chair of this team of student volunteers. My role as chair was to keep an overview of all activities and make sure everything runs smoothly. Assigning team members to certain tasks and positions, motivate them, listen to them and create a fun and safe environment. I was also responsible for managing relations with external parties (sponsors, partners) we worked with, other student teams and the UNICEF headquarters in The Netherlands.Here, I developed leadership and organization skills through rethinking and applying strategies in order to tackle challenges related to engagement of members, broadening our network and establishing relations with external parties. The main work activities were welcoming guests, taking orders, serving food and beverages, handling payments and overall mise en place during breakfast, lunch and dinner time. Besides restaurant activities, the hotel rents out several meeting rooms and hosts events in the lounge as well. The activities related to banquet and events were part of my job too.I was able to work independently and was given the responsibility of closing the restaurant (including cash register) and keeping an overview, as well as training and guiding new staff members and interns.Here, I have experienced working in a diverse environment, developed in training new staff members and learnt about the importance of establishing relations with hotel guests.       Constantly training new employees and being actively involved in the onboarding process. Giving one to one training to new employees for a period of 3 days. Responsible for teaching new colleagues how to work in the different systems used, conservation techniques, policy’s, SOPs, administrative handling of medical case files. Welcoming new employees and creating a positive atmosphere at the workplace. Adjusting the style of communication and pace of the training to each trainee. Laying out a structure for the training days and assisting other trainers in how to approach the training days. Due to a fast scale up in employees, there were a lot of new hires in a short period of time. Therefore, my work activities changed and was put into a new position. On average, training 1-2 new employees (partially or fully) per week. On days that my work does not include training new hires, it is my responsibility as coach to actively help new colleagues who just received the training and start working independently.
