      Mechanical Apprentice

A combination of on-site and college training, vocational and academic. Attained SVQ Level 3 (SCQF7), Level 2 and an HNC (A).First year: Mechanical/machinery overhauls, hand fitting, machining, pipefitting, electrical, instrumentation, process operation, draughting, NC unitsSecond & third year: Working towards SVQ level 3 and HNC Mechanical Engineering, day release to Forth Valley College. Additionally, in third year I did a short placement with a third party valve repair workshop working on safety valves, focusing on inspecting, overhauling and testing them.Fourth year: On-site full time Show less

      Mechanical Technician

Mechanical maintenance of rotating & reciprocating machinery, pressure vessels & pipework. In July 2016 I was promoted to a lead technician, which has involved taking the lead during major equipment overhaulsCarrying out planned, preventative& breakdown maintenance, and inspection on equipment including:• Pumps - centrifugal, positive displacement, single stage, multi-stage• Steam turbines - single, multi-stage• Compressors - centrifugal, positive displacement, multi-stage• Fans - fin fans, centrifugal• Gearboxes - reduction, high speed, spur, helical• Heat exchangers - shell & tube, plate, floating head, U-tube, hybrid• Seal systems - commissioning & maintenance• Pipework, pipefitting, small bore tubing - bending, threading, bolting• Valves, steam traps, governor/throttle valves, trip valves etc• Oil/gas fired burners• Balancing rotating assemblies to ISO 1940-1• Use of manual machine tools for component repair/modification• Pressure testingOther duties include:• Lead technician on major equipment overhauls, including large multi-stage reciprocating compressors (8100 HP/6MW). Along with taking part in the overhauls I have also been involved with working alongside OEM technicians/engineers, contacting contractors to arrange scaffolding, insulation etc, dealing with spares/tooling and ensuring that work is completed correctly and on time.• Laser alignment, including multi-train alignments, calculating thermal growth offsets• Belt/pulley maintenance/alignment• Fault-finding & root cause analysis• Training apprentices & other technicians• Punching of completed work• Writing method statements & risk assessments• Using Maximo CMMS• QA on maintenance workpacks/overhaul reports. This also includes organising/chairing action plan meetings with the relevant parties and ensuring all documentation is up to date to ISO:9001 standard, along with determining how to reverse engineer machinery with no OEM support• Creating engineering drawings on AutoCAD Show less
