The underwater environment of Maryland is murky, dark and cold, and even under the best of circumstances gridded searches are conducted by touch rather than site due to low visibility. Diving operations are often difficult and dangerous, but also crucial to the marine related operations of the agency. The underwater operations unit routinely provide specialized services such as body recovery, evidence and property recovery, fisheries surveys, underwater investigations, underwater maintenance and side scan sonar operations, and does so professionally and proficiently. In acknowledgment of Cpl.
