With Deakin committed to applying the circular economy and working towards zero waste to landfill by 2030, an innovative solution was needed to tackle this challenge. In 2020, Deakin used a sustainable asphalt product called ‘Reconophalt’ to build the 350 metre Nicol Drive North road extension at the Waurn Ponds Campus. The asphalt used in this stretch of road included 165,000 plastic bags/packaging equivalents, toner waste from 3,700 toner cartridges, and 41 tonnes of reclaimed asphalt. A sector leading partnership was subsequently established to recycle Deakin’s soft plastic for use in the sustainable asphalt, which can then be bought back and used on-campus.Enabled by strong internal collaborations for sustainability, this initiative exemplifies the application of circular economy principles and progresses Deakin towards zero waste by 2030.
