  Pro gradu thesis Saami Images in the Finnish Tourist Industry (1998). The thesis is an analysis of pictures in tourist brochures and observes how the Finnish tourist industry constructs cultural images to market Lapland. The thesis shows that the visuals portraiting the Saami are not about a people living in northern Finland but a pastiche that supposedly meets the expectations of potential visitors with some kind of taste for the exotic and the faraway. The thesis aims to understand what connects the event to the social realm that makes it happen. The main argument is that the separation is a metaphorical way of maintaining the social structure in place – a structure expressed through kin links and affinal ties.
