I started working in the field of mental health and substance abuse when I started my BS of Science in Psychology because I wanted to have hands-on experience and this changed my life overall. This program showed me what my purpose was and made it clear that I wanted to work helping others. I learn about every aspect of Psychology which is my foundation for my Masters in Counseling Psychology which I will be starting next year and then my Doctorates in Clinical Psychology. It has given me a strong foundation for my career which I flourished in after starting my program. I feel psychology changes your way of thinking entirely and gives you that sense of purpose you need, while learning the basics, including background of psychology and how it is used today. Psychology paired with working in the field hands on gives you a flashlight on a path that was once very dark. Show less

      May 2011 - Jul 2013
      Medical editor and transcriptionist

This job was building the medical record.I would listen to the doctor's dictation and some of them were very very difficult including strong accents. Then I would dictate and transcribe office visits and then the course of treatment.I would translate Latin into English mostly for prescriptions. I had to be proficient and my knowledge of the prescriptions to make sure that the amount given was correct.I had to be proficient (98% accurate or higher) in the dictation and transcribing of the records. This laid my foundation for my computer skills. I use Microsoft Word and two other platforms simultaneously to build the record in Microsoft Word to check it on another platform and then finally to send it to the doctor. I did my internship for the first year and then was offered a job. This gave me the CEU's needed to start my bachelors which meant that I had enough for my associates at that time. I continued to work with them until I decided that it was time for me to build my social skills. I had been working on a computer 10 to 12 hours a day and I felt it was in very important for me to gain new skills to advance to my dream of becoming a psychiatrist. Show less

      Jul 2013 - Jan 2014
      Sales associate and Cutting Corner

I would cut fabric which I really enjoyed and it gave me the opportunity to have more interactions with the public since before this I had work as a medical editor on a computer than 12 hours a day and didn't really have that much human contact on the job. every job teaches you skills.I was able to learn how to work a cash register and patience with customers which I believe made me a better person and gave me skills for the field that I ended up going into which is mental health and substance abuse.I did not work long there not because of any issues or concerns but because I put in my two week notice because I wanted to work at the Mental Health Association and was offered a job. I had started my bachelor's and I wanted hands-on experience to go with my education. Show less

I worked as a residential assistant in a residential program for women and I can say that was my foundation after working in customer service. I started my bachelor's degree, going back to school for something that I am passionate about, helping others. I knew I needed a hands-on experience to go with my education. My responsibilities included:1.) Assisting participants in utilizing strength to reach short-term and long-term goals.2.) Educating and empowering participants to reach their full potential.3.) Assisting with chores and cooking meals.4.) Providing transportation to appointments.5.) Showing compassion and empathy while realizing the importance of meeting daily goals for growth but sympathizing with the time in their life that they were at and knowing the difficulties by experience, and helping them see the importance of their own lives. Sometimes just giving a listening ear. Show less

    • Gandara Center

      Dec 2014 - Feb 2016
      Assistant Director/Promotion

I was responsible for creating and facilitating groups related to substance abuse and mental health such as Wellness, which included guided relaxation and journaling. other groups that I created were relapse prevention and importance of goal setting in sobriety.I requested to keep some of the previous responsibilities from my position before the promotion, as Outreach Coorinator, such as speaking at the Intensive Outpatient Program monthly and presentations with providers and parents of children with addiction and mental health concerns to not only help others but to practice my social skills. This inspired me because I was able to share my experiences when asked and also to give others hope of other pathways to recovery. I was responsible for staff schedule for many months and I was actually the acting director for several months when others thought that it may not last, we (my co-worker and myself-2people alone) made sure it did and boy did it! I assisted in coordinating events and being responsible for those individuals when on outings.I am thankful for all the experiences I have had because every experience led me to a better one where I could be of more help.I was called the "Sunshine in a dark place" just a little while ago when a few individuals reached out to me and said how sad they were that I was no longer w/them. But, that's when they can see how strong they are and what they can do on their own! I am thankful for all of the experiences that I've been through.I had 8 years in recovery, March 31st of this year 2016, and I love sharing with others that there are many pathways. People are not always going to respect your pathway but you alone can prove to others that it works. There are many obstacles put in our way everyday from the least expected places. Remember where you came from and where you are today and how much work it took to get here. be honest be true and focus on you! Show less

This allowed female individuals that came into the center to feel as if they had someone to relate to and they did. Show less
