      Deck Navigation Officer

The Navigating Officer on a modern cruise ship has to be expert in celestial, electronic and coastal navigation techniques, it is also necessary to be proficient in the use of advanced navigation systems as ECDIS, NACOS and being familiar with innovative bridge management concepts as BTCC (Bridge Team Command and Control).During deep sea navigation I managed the Bridge Team which included one Cadet and two able seamen who acted as helmsmen and lookouts, it was my task to enforce all applicable fleet and international regulations such as COLREGS, SOLAS, MARPOL.The most important responsibility of the OOW is that which concerns the safety of passengers and crew. I had to be able to take initial actions in the event of potential incidents such as fire, flooding, loss of buoyancy, man overboard etc. This included performing damage assessment and control, understanding the procedures for rescuing persons from the sea, assisting ships in distress and responding to any emergency which may arise. An expertise in ship's stability, manoeuvrability and construction is essential to deliver an effective response.I’m a qualified general GMDSS operator having detailed knowledge of the equipment of a ships radiostation, Digital Selective Calling (DSC), the principles of Narrow Band Direct Printing, Telex and INMARSAT systems.I’m proficient in the manoeuvring of survival crafts and rescue boats (FRCs) including operation of vessels' launching appliances and the use of the emergency radio equipment as satellite EPIRBs and SARTs. I’m trained to perform basic medical tasks, and follow instructions given by radio or obtained from guides. As part of my out of watch duty I was responsible for monthly safety checks for LSA (lifeboats and life rafts) and FFE (extinguishers and air cylinders) and chart maintenance in both paper and electronic format. In addition I gave support for the trainings to ensure that all crew are familiar with their duties in the event of an emergency. Show less
