      Project Manager and Mine Risk Education (MRE) Advisor for an Iraqi NGO Jan 05 – Aug 06, JordanManaged a capacity building project with an Iraqi NGO to deliver a MRE campaign and establish a mines and unexploded ordnance victim surveillance system. Produced a proposal to secure funding of £1.25m for this project from the (UK) Department of International Development through the British Council’s Civil Society Fund for Iraq. While based in Jordan for safety reasons, I advised the NGO’s senior management on all operations and the work of 56 Iraqi staff (across 6 governorates) and monitored the activities. MRE Advisor to the Iraqi National Mine Action Authority (NMAA) Sept 03 – Dec 04, BaghdadPlayed a key role in developing an Iraqi capacity to manage an MRE programme. Supported the development and implementation of a national strategy and standards for MRE and the national coordination of MRE. Developed a cartoon mass media campaign.Iraq MRE Coordinator (secondment to UNICEF), May – Aug 2003, Basra and BaghdadDeveloped emergency guidelines and co-ordinated the implementation of MRE nationally with other NGOs and UN agencies. Landmine Impact Survey (LIS) Lebanon, Deputy Project Manager, Mar 2002 – Apr 2003, BeirutWith the Project Manager, established operational capacity for the survey, developed links with key stakeholders, recruited, trained and led 30 national staff to implement the field work, and conducted quality checks. The survey in Lebanon was part of a global survey initiative to identify all communities affected by mines and to determine the socio-economic impact. The data was for the Lebanese Government for national planning on mine action and to mobilise international funding. Show less

      For Landmine Monitor 2009 I edited all Risk Education (RE) country reports, conducted research on RE for 30 countries, and wrote the RE executive summary draft. I worked with in-country researchers and conducted research directly, interviewing and corresponding with UN, government and NGO programme managers and advisors, and reviewing project documentation. I also worked on 2007, 2008 and 2010 reports. I conducted field missions to Angola, Lebanon, Jordan and Yemen. Landmine Monitor is used by governments, international organisations and civil society to review progress made and remaining challenges in eliminating the threat from landmines and providing services to survivors.       As the first Director appointed, I worked with the Executive Committee to develop and implement a multi channelled national advocacy communication strategy in the UK for Palestinian rights. Using limited resources PSC aimed to influence policy makers and raise awareness among the general public, through a website, publications, cultural events, protests, the media, working through a large network of branch activists and partner organisations.

Responsible for the establishment of operation facilities; recruitment and training of operations and support staff; management of the operations; administration and logistics departments; ensuring that HI met LMAC accreditation requirements; and liaison and reporting to the donor and the LMAC.

      Managed two Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams during the post-conflict emergency phase (until June 2012) conducting spot tasks in various locations across Libya. Delivered emergency Risk Education (RE) and training in order to develop the capacity of the Libyan Red Crescent Society and other actors to conduct RE. Led the establishment of an Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) victim data collection and management system with the Libyan Mine Action Center (LibMAC). Liaised with all relevant mine action stakeholders to identify national government capacity building needs and opportunities for EOD, and developed ICRC’s WEC plans for 2013. Contributed to efforts to collect information and develop messages on Small Arms Light Weapons (SALW) with other actors. Show less

      As GIZ’s Capacity Building Advisor, I was embedded in the Libyan Mine Action Center (LibMAC). I conducted an organizational development assessment and, in agreement with the LibMAC management and in consultation with other organisations supporting the LibMAC, developed a capacity development plan. Accordingly, I organized workshops and training courses, and provided on-the-job training. I also contributed to the Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM) component of GIZ’s programme, which worked with the Arms and Ammunitions Department and Army Engineers. Show less
