During my 17 year of service with Tidewater Community College, I served as Coordinator of Learning Assistance for seven years and Supplemental Instructor Trainer for four years before becoming Assistant Director of Student Support. As Coordinator of Learning Assistance I hired, supervised and evaluated 25+ employees to ensure they were providing the services to ensure our students were receiving the help needed to persist to the next academic year. I also worked closely with enrollment management and our early alert program to identify students that needed additional academic support. As Supplemental Instructor Trainer, I worked closely with faculty and staff to build and strengthen relationships across the campus to support student success in difficult gatekeeper courses. Show less As an Adjunct Faculty member at Tidewater Community College, I gained experience teaching mathematics to students of various ages. Since the median age of students at TCC is 25, each semester I had the pleasure of teaching students from teenagers to late adulthood. I also taught online mathematics and found adaptive ways to engage my online students. As Adjunct Math Faculty, I taught students in math from Pre – Algebra through Business Mathematics. As a Math Specialist/Tutor I helped students understand concepts from Pre-Algebra through Differential Equations. I am able to help students discover their learning style and adapt my lessons to benefit the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning modalities. I can use this same skill to analyze the current online program, and provide suggestions on how to improve this program. I also successfully co-taught a learning community that integrated a Student Support course with a developmental algebra course. Show less

As a counselor of the Open Door Project, I provide advising and link students to the academic support they need to graduate. When I left TCC in 2010, 47 percent of the students were maintaining a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). The students in graduated at 5 times the rate of similar students not in the program. During our new student orientation, I gave the students a Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) that highlights each student’s academic strengths and weaknesses. I use this information to develop workshops to help sustain their strengths and reduce their weaknesses. Show less
