Existing investigation methodologies used by law enforcement organisations were developed for traditional communication systems and may be ineffective against Internet-based communication technologies. A need was identified for the development of methods for investigating the use of Internet-based communication technologies to supplement existing methods employed by law enforcement organisations. The research opportunity harnessed in the dissertation is physical memory forensics. The presence of remnant data in RAM provides an opportunity to develop methods for acquiring information about the use of Internet-based communication technologies where existing methods may be inadequate. The research developed a framework; a theoretical approach to the analysis of physical memory for extracting information about the use of Internet-based communication technologies. Show less
