And, with an estimated 4 million households living in fuel poverty in the UK, energy advice – the opportunity to increase awareness and understanding through processes of knowledge exchange - is regarded as one of the critical components in overall efforts to alleviate the social problem and its impacts.Centred on further developing effective communication and engagement strategies with those living in or at risk of fuel poverty, this research employs a qualitative mixed-methods approach to examine three distinct contexts in which energy advice occurs: (1) a formal energy advice organisation, (2) ‘mundane’ settings, such as advice activity between relatives, friends or neighbours, and (3) energy advice online. My main role with this organisation has been to provide clients with a first point of contact when accessing service. Day to day within this role, I provide advice on a wide range of issues, both face-to-face and via telephone. I support various client groups by making referrals or signposting individuals onto the most appropriate sources of help or information, and where possible assisting clients in achieving particular outcomes independently. I also carry out in-depth appointments with clients, as a generalist adviser, providing more detailed support on a range of matters including issues related to housing, debt, welfare, immigration, consumer issues, among many others.
