  Worked at the Acid Plant which is part of the Anglo American Platinum Waterval Smelter Complex. Assisted engineers with various testwork and daily data analysis. Throughout the work period daily morning meetings were conducted as well as the updating of daily spreadsheets to capture plant performance, operation, safety and critical call-outs.A re-commissioning project was undertaken together with an experienced engineer to re-configure an acid neutralisation section of the plant which is key in the treatment of waste acidic material from conversion and off gas treatment. Due to regular process upsets and downtime, an investigation into the efficiency of neutralisation and trouble shooting was done. This included process data analysis, make up samples and conducting continuous plant operation in comparison to batch operation to test whether the original process could handle the new methods devised to treat the solids build up in key unit operations due to batch operation and under performance of the neutralisation plant.   Vacation Work - Metallurgical Trainee

  Worked at the Polokwane Metallurgical Complex, specifically at the Smelting Operations. Introduction to Pyrometallurgical processes as well as materials handling and off-gas treatment was done. Assisted metallurgists with various test work, fault finding and trouble shooting in the day to day running of the smelting complex. An in depth project pertaining to the wear on the matte tap-holes of the 6-in line carbon electrode electric furnace was done. This entailed modeling a wear profile as well as research into the causes of wear of the refractory bricks in the tapping channel. Data was used from previous years as well as the current year in order to quantify the clay consumption required for suitably filling the tap-holes after the tapping of matte. Results from this investigation played a key role in data acquisition for determining future operational methods and parameters for safe and reliable smelting operation.Other tasks included: nitrite testing, TDS measurements, daily plant walk abouts, key equipment labeling, data analysis and trouble shooting, slag and thickener settling tests, sample cut data logging and analysis, flash drier bag house monitoring, coal sampling and PSDs, augar sampling of wet concentrate, analytical laboratory work and technical presentations to management to name a few.   Involved in the Operational Running of the SCF (Slag Cleaning Furnace) and WFM (Waterval Final Matte Granulation) Sections at the WV Smelting Complex. - A one of a kind furnace in South Africa which treats highly oxidized Waterval Converter Slag (WACS) for further recovery of valuables. Part of the WVS Technical Team which was involved in the monitoring of the furnace rebuilds and ramping up of the two Six-In-Line PGM Smelting Furnaces (FCE 1 and FCE 2) for an end-wall repair and complete ring repair respectivelyInvolved in the complete rebuild of the SCF (Slag Cleaning Furnace) and Gas Plant.
