I spent my first summer between freshman and sophomore year studying coastal energy at the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The following summer, I interned at a film company in Australia. I spent the next two summers in Europe learning about city and energy planning in Germany, Sweden, and Denmark and creating two documentaries on renewable energy in Germany and Spain. Show less

      The WCHA is a non-profit, affordable housing cooperative consisting of three properties collectively run by its residents. As an intern, I initiated my own projects and work schedule by identifying needs of the association, organizing them into a priority list, and constructing a calendar of realistic deadlines to achieve solutions. My work was done on a team of three.Projects:• Co-wrote a grant that awarded $30,374 to the organization for re-siding construction.• Oversaw a fundraiser that rose over $300. Event required soliciting businesses for donations, writing receipts and thank you follow-ups, coordinating participants, and delegating responsibilities.• Developed a membership program aimed at increasing funds for the organization and outside participation by the community. The project included drafting proposals, communicating the process to all members of the organization, and incorporating feedback into revisions.• Researched improvements for water and energy usage and set up water efficiency and solar thermal audits.• Created database to ensure easy continuation of projects for future interns.       As a City Year Member, I worked on a diverse team of 13 corps members to lower the academic gap in high-poverty communities. Specifically, I worked alongside a teacher in an 8th grade math classroom, providing academic interventions to the bottom 25 percent of performing students.Responsibilities:• Saw between 10 and 60 students on any given day, working in group sizes of between one and 30 students at one time.• Reached a total of over 1200 documented minutes throughout the year with individual students.• Handled entering and interpreting data daily as well as using data to inform decisions.• Lead my team in media outreach projects and including maintaining a team Twitter and Instagram account.• Contributed to the initiation of a newsletter for the City Year Miami region called theFlame.• Delegated responsibilities and coordinated information between my team and the larger region.
