      Intraoperative monitoring (IOM) is used to monitor patient's peripheral and central nervous systems during surgery. IOM is utilized by surgeons to reduce the risk of temporary or permanent damage to these systems through immediate recognitionof any change in neurologic function. Once a change hasbeen recognized, the technician alerts the surgeon so that the surgeon may alter his or her surgical technique to reduce the chance of postoperative deficits.
