      Machine Learning Intern

For 6 months I interned at IBM CIO Benelux, where I worked on a Visual recognition project as part of a Proof of Concept together with a client. For this client we developed an object detection pipeline for a specific small object in very large pictures, by integrating and expanding the current IBM Watson Visual Recognition capabilities. We were able to realize a rough pipeline involving both an object detection and visual recognition aspect. Thanks to a positive result of the PoC, the collaboration will be further continued between IBM and the client. Since it was a Proof of Concept, I had a lot of fun exploring different technologies and gaining hands-on experience training neural networks with the IBM powerAI hardware. For the project I worked together in a small Agile team, with members from both the IBM CIO team and the client’s team. I really enjoyed experiencing the Agile approach, as well as the more business-oriented meetings in the later stages of the internship, as I hadn’t experienced this before. Outside of the project, I also got to participate in various activities with the other interns of CAS (Center of Advanced Studies) and the CIO team, with activities such as an internally organized hackathon and the IBM Quantum challenge.
