  Summer Intern

  My main focus during the summer was in project LEX4BIO. Main goal of the project is to create knowledge for EU policies to optimize the use of bio-based fertilizers in agriculture. I participated in creating the experiment system and maintained it the whole summer. During the summer I also assisted with other projects, they included laboratory experiments such as incubation of phosphorus and nitrogen, surveying gas and also some field works.   I worked at the wood laboratory, which investigates the incidence of quarantine pests found in imported wood or Finnish coniferous forests. My main focus was to identify insect samples based on their morphology. Other work that was included in my days was laboratory maintenance and a review of two quarantine pests distribution (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and Agrilus planipennis).

  Butterfly transect monitoring in peatlands. Each peatland has an area that is natural, restored, and drained. Aim of the study is to discover how restoration has affected species occurence.

  Field work for project PÖLYSEURA, which monitors the status of key pollinator groups. Pollinator (butterflies and bumblebees) counting in agriculture and forest habitats. And collection of samples from color traps to get information of other important pollinators such as flower flies and bees.

  Working in the entomology team of the Finnish Museum of Natural History (Luomus). Collection work with moths and butterflies, identification and collection managing. Digitization (also photographing) of the scientific collections including insects and plants. Have been given more responsibilities: posting of the Zoology unit, assisting with the practicalities of an university course and supervision of young students.
