Docent - Cradle of Christianity Exhibit

My responsibilities were to guide teaching tours of The Cradle of Christianity Exhibit that explored the common cultural roots, shared sacred stories, and mutual understanding of Greco-Roman tradition of the monotheistic faiths of Judaism and Christianity. Understood today as separate religions, in the earliest days after Jesus death, Jewish and Christian beliefs and practices weren’t seen as different religions within Greco Roman Hellenistic Culture with no clear boundaries. Early Christians thought themselves to be and lived their lives as Jews. The exhibit was put together for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Israel and on loan to the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. All artifacts on display were excavated and restored in Israel and are property of the Israel Antiquities Authority. The first part of the exhibit presented the life of Jesus during the time of the second Temple, described by Jewish historian Josephus Flavius, against the background of Galilee and Jerusalem during the period in which Jesus lived - the early 1st century CE. The second part of the exhibit focuses on the emergence of Early Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism during the 4th-7th centuries, a time when architecture, objects and symbols we associate today with the two religions began to emerge. This exhibit was founded to promote inter cultural understanding of the shared history of the Christian and Jewish faiths. רוצה לראות פחות
