      Undergraduate neuroscience research

I conducted undergraduate behavioral neuroscience research under Divya Sitaraman, Ph.D. at the Unversity of San Diego. I studied the neural basis of ovipositional preference in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. To this end, I was responsible for maintaining stocks of flies, making crosses of transgenic lines, and performed oviposition assays to quantify changes in behavior due to genetic mutations. Ultimately, I was looking for specific output neurons in the fly brain that are responsible for a female fly's preference to lay eggs in a substrate containing ethanol over a plain substrate. In the course of my research, I developed a unique chamber made by laser cutting layers of acrylic to more efficiently perform oviposition assays. I have also presented my research at the Neuroscience 2016 conference hosted by the Society for Neuroscience. Often, I was responsible for mentoring new members to help them get acclimated to the lab environment and the tasks they would be performing. Skills obtained: Fly breeding and rearing, assay design, laser cutting, mentorship/leadership skills, fly brain dissection, method development Show less
