SHS friction test is carried out on different soft solids such as rubber, PDMS, gelatine, and wet layer of BCS soil in direct shear mode to characterize its frictional properties in stable regime as well as in stick-slip regime. Similarly, SFS test is also carried to characterize aging time dependent friction at a fixed velocity. Numerical models are also proposed for static friction as function of shear velocity and hold time to characterize the onset of sliding of the mass from rest. The friction model is based on the observation that formation and rupture of capillary adhesion between granular particulates results in adhesion and friction. Finally, as an application of the present study, FEA of a typical rock joint is carried out in presence of the wet granular layer carried using the concept of fracture mechanics. Results are justified from laboratory scale to field scale. Show less
