  Intern at the Carbonate Research Team

  The Cabonate Research Team was developing a Petrel plug-in called the Carbonate Shoals Module that is able to model carbonate shoals. I showed that by using the Multi-Point Facies modeling functionality in Petrel it was possible to condition the output of this module to well data, probability curves, scaling factors and directionality trends.

  At Total a geological modelling tool was being developed that was able to simulate fluvial deposits. This modelling tool uses several scientific principles in order to create a process-like simulation of the sediments and at the same time it is able to condition the output to several kinds of input data. My task was to test this tool by building a large geological reservoir model based on real world data. Additionally I investigated some possibilities to optimize the balance between simulation time and grid resolution on the resulting reservoir model. Show less

  Together with my colleagues at the Advise & Innovation team I work on large scale storage in the subsurface with as objective to accelerate the energy transition. This objective motivates me greatly to support and work on innovative research, to apply the results in commercial projects and to a advise the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate on related policy questions. Currently I am working on several studies to investigate the technical feasibility of storing hydrogen in natural gas fields. Integrated energy system modelling shows that the growing contribution of renewable energy to the Dutch energy mix will require significant storage capacity to compensate for fluctuating electricity production from wind and solar energy. A possible solution is to store energy as hydrogen in the subsurface. EBN is developing projects to store CO2 in offshore depleted gas fields. My involvement regarding this topic is helping to understand and predict the technical challenges concerning the flow of CO2. Besides that I am involved in strategically optimizing the re-use of existing Dutch infrastructure portfolio (gas fields, pipelines, production platforms, etc..) with the aim to store larges quantities of CO2 for the lowest cost to the society. Fields of expertise I focus on in this role are; reservoir engineering (flow of fluids and gases), geology, geochemical & biochemical processes, portfolio analysis of E&P infrastructure, connecting various organizations to stimulate corporation. The combination of working on detailed internal projects and a large number of asset management projects from operators all over the Netherland allowed me to develop numerous valuable skills amongst which are: - Seismic interpretation - Well log interpretation - Dry-well analysis - Hydrocarbon play evaluation - Reservoir model building - Reviewing production behaviour of complex gas fields as part of a multidisciplinary team - Well proposal and field development plan reviewing - Setting up databases with subsurface data to allow EBN to efficiently perform all kinds of analyses - Organizing EBN attendance at exhibitions and coordinating the geotechnical presentation materials - Responsible for implementation of a new system of high-end hardware to run heavy subsurface software - Supervising MSc interns Show less
