I performed bench scale RSSCTs and operated pilot scale biofilter columns in order to evaluate adsorptive and biological mode disinfection by-product (DBP) removal in activated carbon filters. To conduct this research, I collected and blended various raw water sources to produce a range of influent TOC values. Then, I spiked the test waters with different concentrations of DBPs, and evaluated TOC , THM and HAA removal data in a series of different granular activated carbon types and empty bed contact times (EBCTs). Experimental results show that adsorption with bituminous GAC is an effective treatment strategy for the removal of TOC and TTHMs through at least 6,000 bed volumes (42 days at 10min EBCT) and often longer depending on influent conditions.
