      Community Pharmacy Student Placement

As part of the Master of Pharmacy course at the University of Western Australia (UWA), I was able to participate in a five-week community pharmacy placement at Pharmacy 777 Willetton, supervised by David Biancuzzo. During this placement, I was able to gain experience in the areas of OTC counselling, dispensing, and prescription medication counselling, and I was also able to learn about other products commonly stocked in community pharmacies.

The Master of Pharmacy second year cohort attended a workshop hosted by Dr Stephan Lund on the topic of Culture and Diversity. During the workshop, Stephan described his own family background and upbringing and encouraged us to share our own with our classmates, which enabled us to compare and contrast our individual cultural backgrounds and learn more about what makes each of us unique. We were also asked to state our opinion on statements about healthcare and the wider community by moving to opposite sides of the lecture theatre, which allowed us to learn more about other individuals’ perspectives and the reasoning behind their opinions. Throughout this activity, I was challenged to examine my own opinions on each of these divisive statements and compare them with classmates’ responses, and relate our views with how we work to deliver patient-centred and culturally responsive care. This workshop helped me to think about how our own personal views help shape how we communicate with each other and treat our patients, and how issues or misunderstandings can arise from a healthcare worker and a patient having differences in culture or perspectives. As a result of attending this workshop, I will be more attentive to how I communicate to others in relation to our values, beliefs and cultural diversity, and I will strive to learn more about the different cultures represented in our community in order to provide more effective patient-centred care.National Competency Standards:- Standard 2.1 Collaborate and work in partnership for the delivery of patient-centred, culturally responsive care Show less As part of the “Professionalism in Action” unit within the Master of Pharmacy course at UWA, we had to develop and execute a project in collaboration with a community partner. The Ototoxicity and Tinnitus Workshop was an educational workshop aimed at current Master of Pharmacy and Master of Clinical Audiology students. It was developed and executed by the project team (myself, Zed Hong and Immanuel Lantu) in partnership with Dr Robyn Choi of the Audiology department in UWA. The workshop covered the signs, symptoms, causes, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment options for both drug-induced ototoxicity and tinnitus, as well as a basic overview of pharmacokinetics. The aim of the workshop was not only to complement the knowledge base of students from both cohorts while providing up to date and relevant clinical information to ultimately improve patient outcomes, but also to form a relationship between the two allied health fields. My responsibilities in this project included assisting with research, presenting the workshop and helping to manage the logistics behind the event. The response to the workshop was overwhelmingly positive and the project team felt that we were able to meet the goals we set according to the National Competency Standards, which were as follows:- Standard 2.2: Collaborate with professional colleagues- Standard 5.1: Deliver education and training.Through the workshop, we were able to successfully engage with both cohorts, especially through the case study and quiz, and we were also able to improve and reflect on our presentation and communication skills as well as our project management skills. Overall, the project was a positive and valuable experience, and I look forward to participating in similar projects in the future. Show less Zed Hong, Immanuel Lantu and I had the pleasure of meeting with Professor Anthony Akkari in the early stages of developing the Professionalism in Action (PHCY5631) project. During this meeting, we discussed the possibility of collaborating on a community project involving pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenetic testing. We were interested in improving patient outcomes in relation to optimising their medicines intake, as the variance in CYP450 enzyme activity within the population can affect how each individual responds to a particular medicine. In particular, we discussed pharmacogenetic testing services that can be purchased online or in pharmacies, which provide detailed results including the individual’s CYP450 enzyme activity, and lists of medications that may be ineffective, less effective or effective for the individual, including which medications may have an increased risk of adverse effects. In theory, the results from this type of test will help inform prescribing to achieve the best outcomes, as patients will be able to avoid medications which have weak therapeutic effects or potential adverse effects due to their pharmacogenetics, and fewer medications may need to be trialled before a suitable regimen is found. This meeting helped to increase my knowledge on pharmacogenetics, which is a personal interest of mine. As pharmacogenetics is still a growing field in Western Australia, there is still much room for improvement in its uses in pharmacy and medical practice, however I will be interested to see how patients’ experiences can be influenced by knowing which medications are more or less effective for them based on their genes.National Competency Standards:- Standard 1.4 Maintain and extend professional competence Show less
