      Graduate research assistant

As a Graduate Research Assistant, I worked in the Coral Health and Molecular Ecology Laboratory under the guidance of Dr. Joshua Voss. My thesis research focused on characterizing populations of photosynthetic microalgae in symbiosis with a depth-generalist coral species at mesophotic depths in the Gulf of Mexico and comparing these populations to those found on neighboring shallow reefs. This work was part of a larger project funded by the NOAA Cooperative Institute of Ocean Exploration, Research, and Technology. During my time at HBOI, I participated in five research cruises to the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, where I assisted with dive operations to collect coral samples and ROV operations to collect data for benthic analysis, and one research cruise to the Florida Oculina Reef in collaboration with GUE Project Baseline. Additionally, I assisted with field operations and sample processing for research in conjunction with the St. Lucie Reef Project. As a Research Assistant II for the Josephine Bay Paul Center for Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution, I worked mainly with the Keck Genomics Facility. My responsibilities included preparation of amplicon and shotgun libraries, sequencing on Illumina platforms, and bioinformatic analyses of the resulting data.

DNA sequencing is a powerful tool that allows researchers to answer a vast array of questions – What organisms are present? What biological processes are they capable of, which are they currently using, and how does that change with shifting conditions? What genetic mutations underlie adaptation? Since joining the team in September of 2017, Jennifer has focused on helping build GMGI’s capacity to apply questions like these to marine organisms.Jennifer utilizes her background in molecular ecology, sequencing, and field work to actively contribute to several GMGI projects. She’s played an active role in developing and implementing protocols for generating 'omics datasets to answer ecological questions, and has used her bioinformatic skills to help crack the American lobster genome and uncover patterns of aging in the sea urchin transcriptome. For more information on research at GMGI, visit http://www.gmgi.org/ Show less
