  I participated in the work of the local planning department (which - rather unusually - is also a design office drawing up local land use plans). At the end of my contract period I presented my findings and observations to the employees of the department, which included the then current developments in the UK planning system and urban design (mainly the revival of the Garden City Movement which was especially important in the context of Wroclaw since the city has some of the best examples of Garden City-like neighbourhoods in and around it and treats them as some of the most valuable elements of its rich urbanist heritage). I learned a great deal about the Polish planning system, networked with some of the city's decision-makers and- most importantly - fed some new ideas to the city's planners (who were nevertheless very well informed).
