European Gas Turbines (formerly Ruston Gas Turbines and now owned by Siemens), a subsidiary of GEC Alsthom, are the largest employer in Lincoln with a 2000+ work force and turnover of £250 million. Taken on as a Trainee Accountant in 1988, I spent time in all areas of the Finance function, as well as visiting many other business functions within the company. During this time I gained an excellent insight into the complex operation of a large manufacturing company. At the end of my first year with the company I was given a permanent position within the Budgetary Control department. This included responsibility for the production of budgets, forecasts and variance analysis statements for 15 Engineering and Production departments, and giving regular financial reviews to the Department Managers and Directors.
