      Specialist - Telecom/SCADA

The Station Information Systems Operations team provided day-to-day support for the SCADA systems used to gather real-time data from TCPL's remote facilities. My primary role was to provide support for the underlying operating systems (Windows NT and VMS), hardware (VAX, Alpha, and PC), and network aspects of the SCADA system. Initiatives that I championed during this time included the initial development of an integrated asset and problem tracking database, the re-architecture of remote compressor station LAN's to replace existing 10Base5 backbones with 100BaseFX technology, and the conceptualization, design and implementation of a network management system for SCADA infrastructure. As a member of the Telecom Team, I helped to design, implement, and support the physical and logical infrastructure upon which TCPL's local and wide area data networks were based. I worked on a daily basis with routers, hubs, switches, modems, and CSU/DSU's produced by 3Com, Bay (Nortel Networks), Cabletron, Cisco, Hayes, Motorola, Racal, and Shiva (Intel Networks). Through WAN related activities, I gained exposure to common telco services including Megaroute (T1), Hyperstream (Frame Relay), telemetry (multidrop and point-to-point), and analog circuits (dedicated and dialup). LAN projects provided experience with shared, switched, and ATM emulated ethernet supporting data exchange via Appletalk, DECNet, IPX (Novell), and IP. Show less

    • Shaw Communications

      Jul 2000 - Nov 2006
      Network Engineer

Designing and overseeing the operation of Shaw's North American OC-192 public internet backbone and private voice and video backbones required each member of the IP Backbone team to have a solid understanding of the overall architecture of the networks, the underlying Cisco GSR/76xx/75xx/37xx/36xx hardware, and the overlaid routing protocols including BGP, OSPF, and RIP. Within the team, I was also responsible for the network management initiatives used to gather and report the statistics required to maintain and support Shaw's Backbone Networks.Having been developed on an as-needed basis, the management of Shaw's Backbone networks was effected through an eclectic collection of disparate tools, which although highly effective, were not efficient from the perspective of maintenance, configuration, and data integration. In light of this, I devised an overall architectural plan to generalize this set of highly specific tools into a coordinated set of standardized modules that could be easily configured and interconnected to collect, process, and report upon any parameter relevant to the configuration or operation of any network device and thereby the network(s) it constitutes. Through my championship of this concept, I built and led a three member team that was sucessful in creating and implementing such a framework based on Oracle, LINUX and Perl. Show less

      Jan 2014 - now

The mandate of the Strategic Planning portfolio within the Hounsfield Heights Briar Hill Community Association is to champion the long term health and vitality of our community. Strategic Planning seeks to promote our residents’ vision for the future our neighborhood and understand the effects that present and future external influences will have on our community. By proactively engaging and collaborating with those who have the potential to affect change within and around the neighborhood including the City of Calgary and others seeking to invest our community, we can develop synergies and partnerships that will ensure that Hounsfield Heights Briar Hill remains our residents preferred neighborhood to call home! Although the HHBH CA Strategic Planning board portfolio had existed at various times in the past, it did not exist during my board tenure and as such I revitalized the portfolio in 2015 with the above vision and have managed to subsequently grow it from an individual role to supporting a full standing committee in 2018 with its own monthly meetings. The portfolio has and continues to achieve wins for the community and its residents that would have not been realized with its proactive collaboration and engagement. Show less
